Our experience at Sabor Antiguo was nothing short of unforgettable—it was so much more than just a cooking class. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed like family by Tía Jacqui, whose warmth and energy set the tone for the entire experience. This is truly a family-owned gem, and you can feel the love and tradition in every detail. The cooking itself was incredible. We learned traditional methods passed down through generations, using simple, clean, and incredibly fresh ingredients—everything prepared the same day, including the meats. It gave us a deep appreciation for the authenticity and care that goes into Oaxacan cuisine. What made it even more special was the lighthearted, joyful atmosphere. There was singing, dancing, laughter—cooking here isn’t just about following recipes, it’s about celebrating life and culture. It felt natural, unforced, and genuinely fun. But what truly set this apart was how it became more than a class—it turned into a cultural and historical experience. Tía Jacqui shared stories about the origins of the dishes, the traditions behind them, and the rich history of the region. It was like a living history lesson woven into every step of the cooking process. And then, sitting down to eat together was the highlight of it all. We shared not just food, but conversation—talking about politics, current events, family upbringing, and life in general. It felt intimate, authentic, and incredibly human… like sitting at the table in someone’s home rather than attending an organized class. If you’re looking for something meaningful, personal, and deeply rooted in culture, this is it. Sabor Antiguo offers an experience that stays with you long after the meal is over. Highly, highly recommended. Be aware, the entire event was in Spanish. I'm not fluent but it made it that more authentic. Enjoy!!
My place to visit during my stays at the local hostel. Visited area in 2018 and came back again twice on my recent visit. Food is all hand made traditional way, but service is a bit slow depending on the time since there are 2 dinning areas. Cost is right compared to Nov 20 market for under 150 to 200 pesos depending on mea.Overall a place to try if around.
Very friendly and attentive waiter, the food was delicious and came out quick- recommend if staying in the area!
Our family of five took the cooking class with Jaquelina and we all really enjoyed it. Easily one of the highlights of our trip. Great food and great times.
We've had several events at this restaurant, and the food is consistently cooked with fresh, local produce. Their meat, poultry, pork, and cheese all come from local farmers' markets. What truly makes this place special is their adherence to ancient, traditional recipes. They cook nearly everything from scratch, closely supervised by the owner and founder, Mrs. Jacqueline. Your taste buds will certainly bear witness to this! It's not a fancy spot, but it's a great place to taste original Oaxacan food.
A group of 4 of us ate here on a whim because it was near the house we had rented. In short the food put to SHAME some of the very high dollar places we had eaten at in town. This was one of the most consistently excellent dinners with a perfect milanesa , great rocket salad , rice , black beans lovely thin corn tortillas. Also of note , pork ribs tender falling off the bone with red chilli, amazing. As far as the Mole Negro it was better than a lot of higher dollar places. It was frankly the closest to what my brother in law’s maid in DF who was from this area made. It was epic. A grilled chicken breast also honorable mention. It is worth the cab ride or walk to this quiet neighborhood. I was just served the banana in fresh cream for desert. Get a taxi and come down here now.
We took the cooking class with Tia Jaquie. It was incredible. She was such a great teacher and we had so much fun learning to cook traditional Oaxacan food.
