Overall, it's an interesting and nice place. Divided into two relatively small rooms and a summer terrace with a couple of tables. The decor is pleasantly neutral, the tables are beautifully set, and the staff is polite and knowledgeable. I wouldn't count on free parking right there. There are paid parking places around, but we arrived in the evening and just used the free one by the ferry, then walked a couple of blocks here. I would have liked slightly lower prices or slightly larger portions. It was actually funny about it: my meal set of main course + starter + drink cost $40, while my wife's relatively small risotto was $30. They explained to me that this was because of a charity. I came here to eat for myself, no one told me there were any donations here, so for me it was "so-so reason", but I can't say that it is the downside of this place of course: the customers choose what they'll pay for on the menu by themselves. My wife ordered the risotto, as I mentioned before, and I ordered Sausage & Savoy Cabbage Rigatoni. My wife's dish was just okay. I had a similar risotto a couple of months ago that was much tastier. But I really enjoyed my pasta. It was a completely new combination of flavors and aftertastes, so to speak. And I liked the starter too. It was Cider steamed mussels. At first I thought the fries were a little overcooked, but the combination of it with the sauce and mussels created a very nice, interesting flavor. The only thing that we didn't like here: "You can't share one dish between two people". It's like, they won't give you a clean extra plate to split a dish in half between two people, because it wouldn't be profitable for the establishment if everyone will do that. That was the explanation. And I do understand the logic. But considering that everywhere we went in Halifax and the province, we were given a plate if the dish we ordered was big - it was a surprise here to hear a decline. To be fair, the Coke we ordered was complimentary, to soften this impression. So, as I said, overall I liked it here in general. Would I recommend this place? It's hard to say. This is probably the first time I can't give a clear answer. But if we talk purely about the taste of the food, you can probably find some new good taste for a familiar dish from their menu.

The food in this place is amazing. Every single person in my party enjoyed their dish. I order the eggs Benny. It had the perfect balance of flavor and amount of food. The egg was perfectly yolkie, and together with the ham and seasonings, made it a fantastic savory dish. The servers was phenomenal. She had a wonderful smile, was kind, quick, and made pleasant jokes/small talk. The place is small, but was pretty busy on a Sunday afternoon. Highly recommend this place if you are in Halifax.

Had a great experience at The Canteen in Dartmouth. The service was wonderful—attentive without being over the top. Everything we ordered was excellent: the mussels with fries, haddock with couscous, seafood chowder, and lobster spaghetti all really hit the mark. The ambience was great too, making it an easy spot to relax and enjoy a good meal. Definitely worth a visit.

On a trip to the Maritimes, we came back to this place THREE times. That’s how good it was. The lobster & snow crab roll was a highlight while their other menu items were also great options. We were a group of 8 and they were able to accommodate us all together twice (dinner requiring a reservation)

We stopped by for our first visit during the Feb Dine Around time. The Canteen had been on my list for awhile, and thought that the Dine Around menu would be a great chance to try a few different things (assuming that if they’re staples for a month they should be very well executed menu items). We enjoyed the experience! I’d say that the food didn’t knock our socks off. The pasta was quite heavy (the oil/fat after reheated later on was impressive). Portions were very large which is welcomed. The carrot cake was quite good but as self proclaimed carrot cake connoisseurs, we would give it a 7/10. Overall, we will be back but perhaps not as quickly as we had hoped we would want to be revisiting. Side note - our server was outstanding. Absolutely the highlight of our visit. (Man with the moustache, you are fantastic!)

Everything was delicious. You must try the crobster roll! The best I’ve had on my entire trip to Nova Scotia. The scallop risotto was also delicious.

This was our first time visiting The Canteen and I was pleasantly surprised. Cozy and comfortable atmosphere, with friendly and helpful staff. The food was phenomenal and paired with the wine.. out of this world! Absolutely fantastic experience, we will definitely be back.

Food was dynamite. They use as much local products as possible so the menu adapts as product availability changes. The food is delicious and good size portions. The appetizers are sufficient to share between two with a main. Ensure you make a reservation if you want a specific time as there is limited seating and they are busy.
